Ad Altare Dei Catholic Emblem - Jan. 22, 2012
A young member of our parish has earned his Ad Altare Dei Catholic Emblem as a Boy Scout. He was among 35 scouts in the diocese that received the award on Jan. 22 from Father Kyle Schnippel at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral. Ad Altare Dei is a nine-month study of the sacraments that is focused on fostering the scout's faith. Scouting is a faith-based program, yet only five percent of scouts receive the religious emblem for their faith. In comparison, four percent of scouts become Eagle Scouts.

Christmas at St. Mary of the Woods

In pursuit of wisdom, Missionaries go back to school
Early every weekday morning for over two years, Br. Jerry Schwieterman, C.PP.S., went into his room at the C.PP.S. community house in Whiting, Ind., where he makes his home, and quietly shut the door. He sat down at his desk, entered a web address into the browser of his computer, and went to class.
Everybody in the house knew not to bother Br. Jerry during those times when he was completing online coursework with the University of Dallas, any more than they would have barged into a classroom to interrupt him there. Br. Jerry was very serious about his schooling. Anyone who hopes to complete an advanced degree has to be.
Br. Jerry, who is a campus minister at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Ind., is just one of the C.PP.S. priests and brothers to have gone back to school in recent years. Some want to deepen their spirituality with theological studies. Some delve into the study of scripture. Some take courses to develop or improve a specific skill. All hope that further education will help them in their ministry.
“I always wanted to get a graduate degree. I knew that it would help me in all phases of my ministry,” said Br. Jerry, who earned his master of theological studies degree from the University of Dallas in December 2009. “It was a good experience for me; I learned a lot. Every course I took was somehow related to my ministry. And on the days when it was snowy and cold, I couldsit at my computer and thank God that I didn’t have to go outside to get to class!”
Br. Jerry’s degree was unique in that it was earned entirely online.“I was apprehensive at first” about taking classes without a classroom, he said. “I had heard a lot of pros and cons about online classes. But it was a good fit for me. Although the work was very demanding, I was able to keep up with it.”
